A realistic healing timeline after rhinoplasty: the first night, splint removal, when you can work, exercise and fly, and how long the tip takes to settle.

In short

Most people are back at a desk job about a week after rhinoplasty, once the splint is off, and most of the swelling settles within a month. The tip keeps refining for about a year, which is when the final result can be judged.

Patients ask about recovery almost as often as they ask about the result, and with good reason: knowing what each week will bring makes the whole process calmer. The timeline below is a typical course after a standard [rhinoplasty](https://www.drcenkteker.com/en/procedures/rhinoplasty/); yours may differ. Revision, ethnic and combined operations follow the same shape with somewhat longer swelling.

## The first night

You wake with a small splint on the bridge, tapes across the nose and a feeling of being blocked, because the lining inside is swollen. Pain is usually described as pressure and a dull ache, and is treated with the painkillers you are given. A little blood-stained discharge on a gauze under the nose is normal for a day. You will be encouraged to sit up, drink and walk. Cold compresses on the cheeks and around the eyes, not on the nose itself, reduce the bruising that will appear by morning. Most patients stay one night in hospital.

## Days 2 to 3

Swelling and bruising peak. The eyes may be surrounded by purple, especially if the nasal bones were moved, and the face feels puffy. This looks worse than it feels. Sleep with the head raised on two pillows, keep the nose dry, rinse gently with saline, and do not blow. Walking around the house is good; anything more strenuous is not. Eating is normal apart from avoiding very hot or spicy food for a few days.

## Days 4 to 6

Bruising begins to turn from purple to green and yellow. The blocked feeling eases a little as the internal swelling starts to go down. You will still look unmistakably post-operative, so most patients keep to home, short walks and quiet company. Energy returns; boredom is the main complaint.

## Day 7: the splint comes off

Most patients look forward to this day. The splint and tapes are removed, any external stitches on the columella come out, and you see the new outline for the first time. The nose is swollen, particularly the tip, and the bridge looks wider than it will be, but the profile change is already visible. Dr. Teker usually re-tapes the nose for another week or two to guide the swelling.

## Week 2

Bruising is gone or easily covered with make-up. You can go back to a desk job, drive and go out without attracting attention. Glasses must not rest on the bridge for about six weeks; tape them to the forehead or use contact lenses. Gentle walks can become longer; the gym still waits.

## Weeks 3 to 4

Most of the swelling has settled. To people who did not know you before, the nose usually looks natural, and light exercise can resume: cycling on a machine, light weights without straining, swimming in clean water once the incisions are fully healed. Avoid anything that could bring a blow to the face. Sunscreen and a hat become part of the routine, because the skin is still sensitive to pigmentation.

## Months 2 to 3

The bridge is close to its final shape and the nasal bones have healed enough for normal sports; contact sports are best left until three months. The tip remains firmer and fuller than its final state, more so with thick skin. Photographs from this time already look like a result, but the finest details of the tip are still hidden by swelling. Occasional numbness at the tip is common and usually fades.

## Months 4 to 6

The nose feels like your own again. Swelling is now only in the tip and is usually hard for others to see; you may notice it in the morning and see it settle during the day. Sensation usually returns.

## Month 12

The last swelling has gone and the tip shows its final definition. This is when the result is properly judged and when, if a small refinement is ever considered, it can be planned. Revision noses and thick-skinned noses may take until month eighteen to reach this stage.

## Rules of thumb

- Back to a desk job: about a week after surgery, ten days if you prefer to be bruise-free.
- Flying: after the day-seven visit, once the splint is off.
- Light exercise: two to three weeks. Gym and running: four weeks. Contact sports: three months.
- Glasses on the nose: six weeks.
- Sun: protect for three months.
- Final result: twelve months.

Every nose heals at its own pace, and a few days either way is not a concern. What matters is following the instructions in the first two weeks, when the tissues are setting, and being patient with the tip for the rest of the year. Check-ups are planned around these stages; for questions in between you can call the practice.
